Marriage licenses

Marriage licenses in Michigan can be obtained from any county clerk’s office. 

If you are a Michigan resident, you must apply in the county you live in. If both parties are Michigan residents but live in separate counties, you can apply in either county. The license is valid throughout the state.

If both parties are out-of-state residents getting married in Michigan, you must apply in the county where you are going to be married. The license is valid in that county only.

Requirements for both parties at the time of application:

• A valid driver’s license or state ID showing your current address
• A birth certificate or valid passport. If you use a passport, you must provide the full names of both parents and the state or country where they were born
• Social security number (pursuant to MCL 551.102)
• Fee per couple: $20 for Michigan residents, $30 for out-of-state residents
• Your marriage license will expire 33 days from the date of application, so watch your calendar carefully
